The challenge.
Following record flooding in early 2022, multiple landslips and riverbank failures severely impacted key regional transport links between Murwillumbah and Uki. Road embankments were washed away, traffic was reduced to single lanes, and critical access routes for the community were compromised. The project required rapid, resilient reconstruction across multiple sites, while maintaining traffic, protecting the Tweed River environment, and achieving funding eligibility under disaster recovery frameworks.
The approach.
FSG worked within an integrated Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model alongside CMC and BG&E, contributing geotechnical expertise to inform practical, buildable solutions. Geological and geomorphological mapping was used to tailor stabilisation approaches to variable ground conditions at each site, including steep riverbanks and complex alluvial profiles.
The adopted solution centred on gabion gravity walls with dumped rock toe protection and reno mattress end treatments. These treatments were supported by temporary and permanent percussion driven anchors. Soft erosion control measures, such as timber pile fields and/or rock revetments were used to stabilise the upslope and downslope ends of each site.
FSG’s input supported design optimisation through site-specific investigation and adaptability during construction, enabling efficient decision-making in challenging conditions. Collaboration with stakeholders, including incorporation of local geomorphological knowledge, strengthened outcomes and constructability.
The outcome.
The project restored critical transport infrastructure and delivered flood-resilient road corridors, completed three months ahead of schedule and under budget.
FSG’s contribution supported robust, practical geotechnical solutions that managed complex ground conditions and minimised environmental impact adjacent to the Tweed River. The project achieved exceptional quality outcomes, with zero rework and a strong safety performance, while maintaining traffic flow and supporting community recovery.
