FSG’s Technical Director Julian Seidel was on the conference Technical Committee and Ben Collingwood presented a paper written by Collingwood and Slatter on “Construction Methods and Quality Outcomes for Bored Cast-in-Situ Piles – A Review of Current Practice” which provided a consolidated review of typical industry practices and highlighted key areas in which construction quality can be enhanced. Senior Engineer David Lacey also presented a paper written by Look and Lacey on “Rock socket capacity certification using the point load index test”. Field certification of rock sockets during the construction phase typically uses a descriptive strength (or weathering) approach based on visual observations. This case study describes the application of a quantitative tool in the construction certification.
