Subject: Advanced methods for compaction quality control
The acceptance of earthwork embankment construction currently relies on density testing and the California Bearing Ratios (CBRs) for Quality Assurance (QA) of earthworks and unbound granular pavement layers.
These tests are:
- Lag indicators – Several days to over one week is required to complete evaluation of sampled materials.
- Need Oversize corrections – This correction is not consistently being applied across the industry.
- Not a direct measurement of strength or modulus – Design is based on strength and modulus values. A (widely) correlated relationship is assumed.
Join ARRB on Tuesday 26th of June for ‘Advanced methods for compaction quality control.’ The webinar is the first of the series to introduce alternative methods to assess compaction in the field. The audience will be introduced to a range of testing techniques that have become available to the civil engineering community over the past two decades. The advantages, limitations, and fundamentals of the measurements will be discussed. Dr Burt Look from FSG Geotechnics and Foundations will lead the presentation.
